Aviation English in Medellín

Medellín is an important air link between North and South America.

Since English is the language of aviation, the need for Aviation English in Medellín is important as well.
Pilots, air traffic controllers, flight attendants, gate agents, and ground crew personnel all need to be proficient in English.

Aviation English Defined
Aviation English is a part of the world of "English for Specific Purposes" (ESP).

It is characterized by:

  • specialist vocabulary
  • keen listening comprehension
  • appropriate pronunciation and fluency
  • unique language structure
  • interactions in radiotelephony
Every profession has its own jargon and mannerisms.

Aviation professionals who speak another language need to learn the appropriate vocabulary and build strong comprehension skills in English.

Beyond the nuts and bolts of English, you need the confidence and experience using the language to succeed.

Pilots, Air Traffic Contollers and Aviation English
Pilots and air traffic controllers are required to meet International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Language Proficiency Requirements at a Level 4 rating. The ICAO mandate as of March 2008 increased interest in Avaitaon English among the global flying community.

A Level 4 or 5 ICAO rating requires retesting every three and six years, respectively.

You must have solid fluency that does not hinder radiotelephonic communications, strong aviation-related comprehension, and an immediate responsiveness to commands and directions with appropriate pronunciation, intonation, and stress.

Flight Attendants, Gate Agents, Check-in Agents and Aviation English

Flight attendants need Aviation English to communicate not only safety and regulatory information, but general conversational skills to accomodate passengers.

The tone, type of words used, and great comprehension skills are necessary to serve their very important clients.

Gate agents and check-in agents are usually the first airline personnel met by passengers. Often travelers are anxious about the flight and do not travel every day.

The ability to communicate proficiently in English with the adequate tone and resassurances is enough to calm them.

Conclusion
Aviation English is important in Medellín for pilots or those who want to become pilots.

Airlines from Copa to Avianca need English-speaking personnel.

Not only is English necessary for pilots and air traffic controllers, it is mandated by international regulations.

Since English is also the language for tourism, flight and cabin crew personnel also need English to interact with travelers - their clients - and to make their flight as comfortable as possible.

Are you ready to improve your English skills to meet ICAO ratings or to start your career with an airline?

2. Buy a good English dictionary.

A good English dictionary is very important to learn English.

Your Spanish-English bilingual dictionary is not sufficient for serious English learners.

You need a good monolingual (English only) dictionary that shows you the pronunciation, the word stress, part of speech, and most of the definitions or uses of the words.

The best dictionaries from the top publishers (like Webster, Longman, and Oxford).

3. Label items in your house, car, book bag, etc. in English.

Type or write on one side of the paper the English word for that item and the pronunciation on the other side. Tape it to the item. Now every time you use it, you can see what that item is called in English. If you have a hard time pronouncing, you can just look on the other side.

4. Listen to and speak with native speakers.

Speak English as much as possible!

Listen to and talk to native speakers.

Remember, you do not have to understand every word or speak like a native to participate.

5. Do your homework. This is essential if you want to be fluent in English.

Do your homework if you are taking lessons. ASK for homework if you are taking lessons.
