What is your #English learning style?

How do you best learn English?

Everyone learns languages in different ways.

3 Learning Styles
There are three main learning styles:
  • visual
  • auditory
  • tactile/kinesthetic
Humans are visual animals. Charts, graphs, and drawings are an easy way to learn new material. This so-called "eye candy" is only one way to learn a language, however.

Auditory learners like repetition, dictation, and listening for clues. Listening to songs, conversations, and instrutions are important to these students.

Tactile/Kinesthetic learners prefer a non-traditional approach. "Hands-on" students learn best by doing, experiencing, touching, moving or being active in some way to acquire new information.

What type of English learner are you?
Many students of English in Medellín use one or more of these approaches to learning.

Single Success Secret to Learn English

After nearly six years of teaching English, I would say motivation is one secret to successfully learning English or any foreign language for that matter.

Do you feel like you will never dominate English? Are you out of energy or frustrated with your progress?

Check out these 6 ingredients of motivated English learning. Do any of these sound like you?

Purpose
Why are you studying English? Do you need English for work or study? What is the ultimate goal for studying English?

Discipline
Are you dedicated? Do you do your homework? Do you attend class regularly or make excuses instead?

How much independent study do you do?

Languages are not learned overnight. It takes years of focus, frustration, and mistakes.

I learned Spanish over four years in school and later 8 months in Madrid. Between the two I did not study formally, but I kept reading Spanish. I kept my goal alive to learn Spanish.

Nurture your goal to learn English!

Curiosity
Do you wonder why the -ed endings work like they do? Do you want to know how phrasal verbs are constructed and how they are constructed?

A good language learner is naturally curious and a problem-solver.

The logic of a language intrigues and dares you to learn more.

Organization
Along with discipline, organization is important in learning English. Do you keep good notes?

Do you have a vocabulary notebook?

Are your books highlighted or marked to help you find the information you need quickly?

Your overall approach to learning English - organized and disciplined - is important for your success.

Expectations
Are your learning goals realistic?

How much time have you allotted to reach your goal?

It is important to measure your goals and celebrate when you achieve them.

Reward
What will you do when you reach your English learning goal?

Will you get a job promotion? Will you get your MBA?

Conclusions
Focus on the reward. Be disciplined. Know why you are studying English and manage your expectations so you don't get frustrated.
